UCSF Eligibility, Recruitment, and Selection Policy
Prerequisites and Matching:
The UCSF Child Neurology Residency has 2 positions each year. Prerequisites for Child Neurology include two years of general Pediatrics residency training, or one year each of Pediatrics and Internal Medicine internships. Candidates interested in basic science may complete one year of Pediatrics internship prior to starting Child Neurology, but will then have to complete at least one year of basic science research after their clinical residency. For graduates of foreign medical schools, we require that applicants to our program complete at least one year of Pediatrics residency training in a US program prior to starting our training program.
All applicants must be eligible for a full and unrestricted license to practice medicine in California by the start of their child neurology residency.
Child Neurology applications should be submitted through the Central Application Service (CAS) of the Child Neurology Matching Program. For information about registering, please visit their web site at www.sfmatch.org , or call them at (415) 447-0350. UCSF applications and the Universal Application will not be accepted.
If you are a graduate of a foreign medical school, you must take these additional steps:
Step 1: You must hold a current, valid certificate from the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG). This is mandatory for appointment at this institution as well as for licensure in the State of California. You will be required to contact them and arrange to take United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE). After you pass the examination, including the English test, you will be granted an ECFMG certificate. Step 2: After you have received your ECFMG certificate, and before applying for clinical training at UCSF, you must contact the Medical Board of California. They require that you complete their application form and submit various documents and records along with a processing fee. Upon a successful review of your application credentials, your education, and your USMLE scores, the CMB will issue an "Applicant Evaluation Status Letter." This letter enables you to apply for training at UCSF. A copy of this letter must be submitted to the UCSF Child Neurology program director. As part of the application, you will need to submit:

3-5 letters of recommendation (we request that applicants solicit their own letters)

The deadline for submission of the CAS application for the UCSF Child Neurology program is October 1, 2009.

Once your application is complete and available to UCSF Child Neurology, it will be forwarded to the Child Neurology Residency Selection Committee members for review. Applicants who are considered to be strong candidates for the UCSF Child Neurology Residency will be contacted to arrange for a personal interview.

These dates were chosen so that the child neurology applicants can participate in a wide variety of activities that will provide a comprehensive look at our program. Applicants will be invited to a welcome lunch on Wednesday with the Program Director and with the current child neurology residents. After lunch, they will have interviews with representatives of the adult neurology program. They will then be invited to the resident Wednesday afternoon didactic and Grand Rounds lectures, and then to dinner with current residents. On Thursday morning, the applicants will be given a tour and presentation about our residency program, followed by lunch and interviews with the Child Neurology Selection Committee members. We estimate that you will complete all interviews by 4:30 pm on Thursday.
Applicants will need to apply separately to Pediatrics residencies, through a separate match. We encourage our applicants to apply to the UCSF Pediatrics residency. We work closely with the UCSF Pediatrics residency to schedule interviews during the same week. Typically, UCSF child neurology applicants are scheduled to interview with UCSF Pediatrics on the Friday directly following the Child Neurology interviews (i.e., one day following the Child Neurology interviews).
