Clinical Research

Area of Concentration

The Clinical Research area of concentration is designed to accelerate the transition to mentored research training by introducing residents to clinical research study design, statistical analysis, and presentation of results.  The training and experience gained during the fellowship will provide a foundation for applying for a mentored research award (such as a K23) so that research funding can begin after the first year of a clinical subspecialty fellowship.  Since the research experience will be enhanced by commitment to a specific clinical field of study, preference will be given to R3 applicants, though R2s will also be considered.  In consultation with Dr. Johnston, applicants should identify a potential research mentor prior to application.  With advice from the mentor, the applicant should prepare a 4-5 page research plan, which should include Aims, Background, Research Plans, and References.  The proposed research may be distinct from that actually anticipated during the research block, but should represent feasible and interesting hypothesis-driven research.  A committee of three faculty members will read the applications, may meet with the applicants, and will decide on a final candidate.

The 4-6 month clinical research experience can be taken in one or two blocks during the R3 or R4 years.  Trainees will be encouraged to enroll in the Designing Clinical Research (EPI 202) course during August and September of the first research block.  Salary, benefits, and tuition will be covered and a small stipend will be paid to the mentor to support the trainee’s research.  By the end of the experience, trainees will be required to complete one of the following:  a manuscript submitted for publication, an abstract submitted to a national meeting, or a 15-page research proposal in the format of a K23 grant proposal.
