UCSF Department of Neurology has 10 PGY-II Adult Neurology positions. Prerequisites for Adult Neurology include completion of 8 months of PGY-I year (or more) of Internal Medicine. UCSF has 8 categorical positions available. It is not necessary to make a separate application to the Department of Medicine for the 6-8 categorical positions.
All applicants must be eligible for a full and unrestricted license to practice medicine in California.
Applications to the Adult Neurology Residency Program should be submitted through ERAS www.aamc.org/students/eras/start.htm and the National Residency Matching Program (NRMP). For information about registering, please visit their web site, www.nrmp.org,or call them at (866) 617-5834. UCSF applications or the Universal Application will not be accepted.
If you are a graduate of a foreign medical school, you must take these additional steps:
Step 1 : You must hold a current, valid certificate from the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG). This is mandatory for appointment at this institution as well as for licensure in the State of California. You will be required to contact the ECFMG and arrange to take United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE). After you pass the examination, including the English test, you will be granted an ECFMG certificate. Step 2: After you have received your ECFMG certificate, and before applying for clinical training at UCSF, you must contact the Medical Board of California. They will require that you complete their application form and submit various documents and records along with a processing fee. Upon a successful review of your application credentials, your education, and your USMLE scores, the CMB will issue an "Applicant Evaluation Status Letter." This letter enables you to submit an application for training at UCSF. A copy of this letter must be submitted to the UCSF Adult Neurology Residency Program Director. All Adult Neurology Applicants must register with both ERAS (Electronic Residency Application Service) and NRMP (Neurology Resident matching Program). The UCSF Neurology Selection Committee will begin reviewing completed applications in early October 2011. As the selection committee recommends candidates for interviews; interviews are offered until all of our interview slots are filled. Once the interview slots are filled, the selection committee will keep a handful of applications on a waitlist. The deadline for application for PGY-I beginning July 2011 and/or PGY-II beginning July 2012 is November 15, 2011. It is not recommended you wait until this deadline to submit your completed application.
You should plan to include 3-4 letters of recommendation with your application from faculty who know you well and have worked with you. Your letters should include at least 1 from a neurology faculty member. If you are a PhD student, it is recommended one of the letters be from your PhD mentor.
When registering with ERAS and NRMP, please remember:
Categorical – programs that begin in the PGY–1 year and provide the training required for board certification in medical specialties.

Preliminary – one-year programs beginning in the PGY–1 year that provide prerequisite training for advanced programs

Once your application is complete on ERAS and available to UCSF Neurology, it will be forwarded to the Neurology Residency Selection Committee Members for review. Applicants who are considered to be strong candidates for the UCSF Neurology Residency Training Program will be contacted to arrange for a personal interview.

Applicants are invited to the resident Wednesday afternoon didactic and Grand Rounds lectures after which they will have dinner with our residents. In the morning on Thursday, the applicants will have an overview of our residency program followed by lunch and then interviews with our selection committee members. We estimate you will have completed all interviews by 6:30 pm on Thursday.
