The first year of training in Child Neurology is the same as in the Adult Neurology program. During the second and third years, trainees are assigned to Child Neurology at Moffitt Hospital. Required electives include training in EEG/EMG, psychiatry and neuropathology. Additional elective time can be devoted to laboratory or clinical research, or to other clinical subspecialties such as neuroradiology or opthalmology.
All Child Neurology residents are expected to participate in a research project during their residency. We are in the process of designing a new Flexible Residency program. This optional program will allow Child Neurology residents to participate in a continuous 6 month period of focused research efforts. The concentrated 6 months of research can only be taken during the child neurology training years.

2 months as Moffitt ward/Consult Junior Resident
2 months as ICU Resident
1 month as Epilepsy Resident
3 months as VA Junior or Consult
1 month of Moffitt Outpatient
2 months as SFGH Junior Resident

First Year Child Neurology:
3-4 months inpatient ward and consultation service
3-4 months of Child Neurology clinic
3 months neuropathology, psychiatry or neurophysiology

Second Year Child Neurology:
3-4 months inpatient ward and consultation service
3-4 months of Child Neurology clinic
3-5 months of electives

During the adult neurology year, there are two call-free months. Child Neurology residents have the same distribution of call in the first year as Adult Neurology residents.
During the child neurology residency years, residents are responsible for home call 3-4 months of the year, as well as home call 1-2 weekends per month.
Other Residency Information
Resident stipends are set by the University of California Office of the President and are subject to revision each year as a function of the California State budgetary process. Residents are entitled to four weeks of vacation. Health, dental and vision, as well as life, disability, and AD&D insurance are provided to all members of the housestaff. Neurology residents receive supplementary educational accounts to cover the costs of licensure, books and professional memberships.
