UCSF Department of Neurology

Visiting Medical Student Program

The Department of Neurology follows all policies and procedures of the UCSF School of Medicine

Sub-Internships in the Department of Neurology

Introduction:  There are five different month-long sub-internships available for medical student rotators in the Department of Neurology, available on a first-come-first-served basis.  Four are based at the UCSF Medical Center- the Child Neurology Service, the Neurovascular Service, the Neurology Inpatient Service, the Neurology Memory and Aging Service, and the Neurology Consultation Service.  Historically, visiting medical students have rotated at the UC Medical Center site.  The sixth option is the Neurology Consultation Service at San Francisco General Hospital.  It is usually reserved for UCSF medical students, but visiting students with a special interest in underserved populations may be interested. All requests for the Neurology Consultation Service at San Francisco General Hospital must be pre-approved.   All six services are quite busy, providing excellent opportunities to expand your neurological knowledge and clinical skills while getting invaluable exposure to our Department.

Service Specific Details:  For information on a visiting subinternship rotation at UCSF, please visit the School of Medicine Electives website for details - listed below. You may have to scroll down the page to view the neurology elective information. Here you will find a brief description of a typical day on each of the services.  Variations should be expected depending on attending preference and service needs.

Where to live?  Because public transportation can be difficult to arrange, we recommend that sub-interns without cars live as close to your rotation site as possible.  For UCSF Medical Center, this includes the neighborhoods of the Inner Sunset, Outer Sunset, Inner Richmond and Cole Valley.  Anything along the “N-Judah” line of the MUNI is usually fine as well.  Past sub-interns have found Craig’s List helpful in identifying sublet options. See "Welcome to San Francisco" section on this website for more details.
