In general, there are two ways to go: move everything you own to San Francisco (a good option if you already have a lot of furniture or pretty things), or start from scratch.
If you decide to hire a moving company, get estimates from two or three, as prices vary considerably. (Estimates are usually free). Try to give the movers 30 days advance notice to arrange your move. While movers offer a wide range of services and packing supplies, explore the possibility of packing yourself, but understand the mover's damage insurance provisions may not apply. If you hire a mover, especially for the first time, we recommend obtaining Better Business Bureau publication (free) to better understand non-binding estimates, limited damage liability, damage claims and other important points. In general, we would recommend using the more recognizable companies --there are some crazy tales out there about belongings disappearing and companies vanishing into thin air.
If you’re moving cross-country, realize that the movers may take 2-3 weeks to arrive in San Francisco with your belongings. Also realize that the movers will expect a tip on both ends.
If you decide to start over, realize that Ikea is wonderful (though gouges you on shipping; pick it up yourself from the Palo Alto or Berkeley stores), Target is brilliant, & Costco has some beautiful furniture (that they will assemble in your home for you!). You may benefit from renting a truck for the day to pick up all of your new furniture, if you don’t have any friends with trucks/vans.
Once you have a San Francisco address, many tasks can be accomplished before you start packing. These include arranging phone, gas, electric, water and garbage services; registering to vote; obtaining handbooks for driving licensing and car registration; and sending out change of address notices.
Several interns highly endorsed moving out to San Francisco in early June, rather than mid-June, which allows plenty of time to get settled & get to know the city.
For anyone moving from outside of the country, in general, customs is difficult.
